Bay Area divorce consultations hit new peak: Notes from Attorney Hoover’s news interview

by | Jan 25, 2021 | Firm News

This last year has taken a heavy mental toll on many people in the Bay Area. As a result, more couples than ever are thinking about divorce.

James Hoover, one of our partners, was interviewed on the topic by ABC7 News recently, for his thoughts on what’s happening. Here are the main takeaways from that interview:

Why is divorce on the rise?

At our law firm, we have seen a massive 50% increase in divorce consultations. Here are some of the extra stresses people have had to face this year that could be causing them to consider divorce:

  • Lack of personal space: Any healthy relationship requires time apart from each other. With more people working from home and many usual activities prohibited, couples have not gotten the time apart they need for their relationship to breathe.
  • Economic worries: Financial pressures can strain even the most robust relationship. You may have lost your job or seen your business income plummet. When you’re wondering how to pay the bills, it can be hard to dedicate time to your relationship. You may take frustrations out on each other.
  • Mental health: Depression and anxiety can happen to anyone. Many of us keep them at bay through exercise, fresh air, and social interaction. Getting them has become much harder this year. Our safety nets have broken when we most need them. Fearing for our lives and the lives of people we love due to a threat we cannot see has also taken its toll.

With no clear end in sight to the pandemic, it is crucial to assess your marital situation. You may be able to save a struggling relationship through honest conversation with your partner. Or perhaps you need the help of a counselor.

What should you do if you know that it’s time for a divorce?

If you have decided it is time to end your marriage, it is vital to seek help to protect your assets. You need to ensure you get the best possible deal in a divorce settlement. Only then can you start to focus on a new, more positive future.
